Proton Savvy Sales Debut in Thailand

Another milestone earned by our beloved first national car maker, Proton. This time around, the company made its mark in the very competitive auto market, the land of the Kaps and Kas - Thailand. Apparently, the Savvy was a seller at the just-ended Thailand International Motor Expo held in Bangkok.

The best selling Savvy in Thailand, surprised?

According to Phranakorn Auto Sales, the distributor of Proton cars, the Savvy accounted for the 50% of total sales, while the GEN2 and Satria Neo were at 28% and 22% respectively. Why does the Savvy outperformed the GEN2 is unknown but logically, its the most fuel-efficient car and seemed to be the cheapest in the market (between RM39,900 and RM46,000) that the Thais are able to afford and upkeep.

Even the launch of the improved GEN2 that came with CPS could not match sales to that of the Savvy. Funny yet ironic, the people in Malaysia are much more eager to have the GEN2 CPS be available here, but the Thais see no such value on the hatchback.

This is a promising sign that Proton is gaining back its sales figures after a terrible slump in the past 2 years. It is true that Proton need to believe in their strengths and capitalise on it especially on international exports. I have full faith in Proton (although, in several previous posts that I am not a fan of Proton cars) to regain its top position, if not in ASEAN, but in our homeland again.

  1. Well, different people will have different taste so we might feel funny from our perspective that Thais love to buy Savvy. I think its main attraction is its lowest price. I hope this time Proton can make more revenue with Savvy. Congrates to Proton!

  2. I have seen your car in the exhibition at Chiang Mai Airport Plaza yesterday (March 20, 2008). I would like to know that your Porton Savvy 1200 CC take what kind of gasoline? Could I fill up its tank with E20 gasohol? Thanks for your reply.

  3. Nope, E20 will not be usable with the Savvy, according to an article in Bangkok Post today.

  4. Where do they sell the Proton cars in Chiang Mai?
