First ever massive car accident in Abu Dhabi

During the morning rush hour yesterday, a terrible crash involving more than 200 cars occurred in the 25km stretch of Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway near Ghantoot. The massive car pile-up was due to heavy fog lingering in the air. There were up to 25 cars in arson, leaving a death toll at least 6 persons so far and hundreds injured in what is known to be the country’s biggest vehicle crash in history.

Waking up to a whole new twisted world of metal

Rescue efforts by the police and helicopter lifts were not an easy task due to the bad weather up till almost noon. The victims were sent to the nearest hospitals but was hindered by halted traffic due to the pile-up.

To add more casualties to the number of victims, there were 12 loads of buses carrying about more than 300  labourers to work  at the same time of the crash. At this time of post, the police are yet to confirm the number of victims suffered in the accident.

Can you identify what car is this?

Burning cars all in a row

The cause of the accident was due to poor visibility of the road. Everyone was speeding despite the bad weather and the 120km/h speed limit along the highway. Drivers did not  leave a safe distance between cars and this resulted in everyone hitting each other after the first crash, according to an Abu Dhabi traffic police officer.

In my opinion, the moral of the story summarises that:

  • Do not speed when visibility is way below 50 meters
  • Do not talk on the mobile phone while driving
  • Show the indicator lights when shifting to another lane
  • Do not drive too slow but considerably fast enough
  • Allow enough safe distance between the car in front you
  • Old cars need to be maintain more frequently
  • Use the public transportation such as trains to commute to work
  • Never use hazard lights while driving in poor visibility conditions
  • Move your car to the emergency lane if it breaks down
  • Divert traffic if your car breaks down by flagging them
  • Keep to a safe driving speed to avoid sudden braking

Let’s just hope these drivers have learnt their lessons… I wish all of you safe driving.

  1. That’s a tragedy.. fyi, the visibilty is less than 1(!) meter these days in abu dhabi, due to heavy fog.. and mini buses are the only(!) public transportation available from abu dhabi.. we got no trains, no subways..

  2. speeding kills.
