Mitsubishi’s Triton in 3.2L 4×4 and 2.5L 4×2 this June
In a reactive decision to stay competitive in the pick-up truck market, Mitsubishi Motors Malaysia have stepped up their product ammo by roping in two new variants of the Triton 4×4 pick-up truck - a 2.5L 4×2 manual and the 3.2L 4×4 automatic, which will also come as a completely build-up from Thailand, like the current Triton is.

The stormtrooper storms again
Having won the Pick-up Truck of the Year endorsed by Autocar, the 3.2L Triton shall be ready to take on the challenge of Nissan’s Navara, which I presume should be coming in pretty soon. The 2.5L version is obviously giving the Isuzu D-Max 2.5L a tough fight but then again, in terms of fuel consumption, I believe the D-Max beats the Triton flat.
Sales of the Triton were recorded at 3,480 units in 2007, a jump of almost 60% from the 2006, earning itself the number two position in its segment after the Toyota Hilux. I see many new Hilux on the roads on a daily basis, to prove it. Not having the best engine around, the Hilux’s saleability is obviously due to its second-hand value of its marque.

Two more babies to choose from
Prices of the two new variants - the 3.2L 4×4 will be at RM100,000 and the 2.5L 4×2 at a low RM60,000. The existing Triton in the market is priced at RM91,782 and RM86,782 (OTR with insurance) for auto and manual tranny, respectively. This means you can own a Triton for less than RM800 monthly (depending on current interest rate and loan tenure)
The Triton is no doubt a stylish looking workhorse that has the roomiest cabin in its segment. Comfort and handling are commendable for a truck like this. To prove my words, check out the test drive I did last year. And how does the Triton fare with the rest of the trucks in the market, you can refer to my comparison.
Whether or not the two new variants will create a storm in Malaysia, I would like to wait and see. The government’s bill to scrap diesel subsidy for private-owned trucks would possibly have a negative impact in sales for Mitsubishi - a rather brave move by the manufacturer, eh.
For fans of the Triton, check out your nearest showroom come June.
